Duane Lee Chapman Jr. was born on December 1, 1951, in Springville, Utah to Duane Lee and Vida Chapman. He has two sisters, Sandy and Janelle. His early life was marked by tragedy as his father died of a heart attack when Duane was only six years old. And his mother soon afterward became an alcoholic.
Duane attended Springville High School where he developed an interest in the military. And began training in karate at the age of thirteen. In 1972, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. Where he served for four years as a security guard at Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha, Nebraska.

Chapman was born in Harlem, New York City, to parents Duane Lee Chapman Sr., a Vietnam War veteran and truck driver, and Gertrude Ann (née Smith), a stay-at-home mother. He had two older sisters. At the age of 12, Chapman began boxing at the Boys & Girls Club in Manhattan with then-undefeated contender Rubin “Hurricane” Carter as his trainer. Over the next few years, he compiled a record of 28-0 before losing by technical knockout to future world champion Michael Spinks on July 18, 1984.
